Heptamerta

The Heptamerta or Hepta Amerta are seven immortal spirit-beings. They are seven Prosopa or persons , who form the members of a divine royal household. The Heptamerta help us make sense of the drama of life, as they represent the spiritual forces at play in the world, whether creating the Ordered Kosmos or attacking it.

The Heptamerta consists of five Amerta Diva and two Amerta Anotera. The Diva are Mithras, the Kosmic Father, the Anhita, the Kosmic Mother, and their three children: Sarus the Listener, Vahram the Mighty and Azidus the Lustful. In addition two Anotera which are Spentamanus the Holy Spirit and Angramanus the Evil Spirit are resident in the household

The Seven

Mithras is the father of the family. He has overall responsibility for keeping the life of the family in Good Order so that the family flourishes together.

Anhita is the mother of the family. She loves all her children and labours to provide all they need to live, grow, heal and to flourish.

Sarus, the Listener is a sensitive being who listens to the creatures of the world, who understands the needs of their souls, and who seeks to provide for them. .

Vahram Magtus Aristus is the mightiest and best being. Vahram is mighty in all ways, he is capable to the limits of human possibility.

Azidus is a being driven by lust, especially a lust for power and who is blind to the consequences of his actions on others except as to how they might rebound on him.

Spentamanus is the 'Holy Spirit' or 'Life-increasing Spirit'. Spentamanus is the being that changes minds in a positive way. Spentamanus brings people wisdom, changes their values to better ones and enlivens the life-loving energies of their souls.

Angramanus is the 'Evil Spirit' or 'Life-decreasing spirit'. Angramanus causes people to do evil, whether by deceit, by inflaming their lusts or blinding them to the negative effects they have on others.


The Divine Royal Household

The Heptamerta can be imagined as a royal household.

Mithras and Anhita can be imagined as King and Queen. They have responsibility for the household - in its provisioning and its governance.

Sarus and Vahram are twin princes. They can be imagined as being born together but Sarus came out first, and is considered the senior. Together they are called the Aspinas or horse-twins when they ride together into battle against hostile powers. Sarus is dressed more like a warrior monk, and Vahram as a more conventional warrior prince.

Azidus is their half-brother. He shares the same mother, Anhita, but he is not the natural son of Mithras. He can sometimes be helpful if managed carefully by Mithras, but by nature he is inclined to follow his own path and cause trouble.

Spentamanus and Angramanus are shape-shifting counsellors and mentors in the royal court. They can appear as human wizards, but most characteristically Spentamanus appears as a white dove and Angramanus as a black raven. Spentamanus is helpful and Angramanus is destructive. However Angramanus often takes on the different appearances, so you don't always know when you are dealing with him.
